August 30, 1843
It has been a warm day. Today we found a large crop of blueberries next to the lake. They were a welcome change from our normal dried oats. The pack I portaged today was full of beaver pelts that were traded with the Ojibwey. The pelts will be used to make hats for fancy men in Europe. The fashion is expensive but keeps me working. Joe fell out of the canoe yesterday. He cannot swim, luckily the water was shallow and we were able to bring him to safety. The light is dim, so will write more when I have time.
